- yeah … Mitt Romney had a rough night last night, losing two major Deep South states — and worse, getting in third place for each. The losses gave Rick Santorum some major momentum for the weeks ahead. (Especially if Newt drops out.)
- … but Romney won caucuses in Hawaii and America Samoa. And because Alabama and Mississippi award delegates proportionally, the result is that Romney was the winner last night by net delegate gain. He increased his lead by six. source
This is almost a direct repeat of Clinton/Obama in 2008. Obama was campaigning, not for state wins, but for delegates, because that’s how you get the nomination. He focused on heavily populated counties where more delegates are allotted. Clinton won many more individual counties in several states (just like Santorum), but Obama won the counties with the most delegates (just like Romney).
You have to understand how the game is played in order to win.
