This afternoon is turning into scenes from The Mist.

I LOVE the fog. That’s probably weird, I know. But I love rain, too. And yes, snow. I think southerners romanticize snow, though, cuz we don’t get much. My Colorado-raised wife would be fine never seeing much snow again.

As I may have mentioned a couple of times, I work at the top of Centennial Tower in downtown Atlanta, 36 floors up. On days like today*, I’m actually in the clouds and it’s almost impossible to make out anything on the ground. Which is a pretty awesome feeling.

* But not actually today, the hell with that. It’s a sleep and veg day today.

With the exception of 100 Bullets, I fully agree with this list (not necessarily the ranking though).

I feel that Fables belongs on this list somewhere. Also…Powers and even though it isn’t really the same format, Scott Pilgrim.

Did 100 Bullets get insanely stupid at some point? I remember really liking it in the beginning.

Pretty solid list. Planetary and Y and Blankets for sure. But I’d put Scott Pilgrim on here as well. Format-wise, it isn’t that much different than Blankets.

Side Note: My wife is not even remotely what you would call a comics fan, and she loved Blankets too.

I understand it’s hard for students sometimes to be discerning enough to figure out when and where a rule might not apply, so blanket rules are best, but…give some of us some credit. Why would you say “Have you read ‘Heart of Darkness?’” Argh.

No, but I always put book titles, TV show titles, and movie titles in italics. So it’d read: “Have you read Heart of Darkness?”

Me too! Also: episode titles in quotes. “The Inner Light” was one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I can’t believe I’m wading in on this, but what the hell. Regardless of how you write book titles, there will sometimes be situations where you would end the sentence with the name of something in quotes. Perhaps a magazine article title?

And I agree completely with what natface says above. Putting the punctuation inside the quotes has never, ever made any sense to me.

Atlanta Property Taxes

I am keeping a watchful eye glued to the AJC’s new series about Property Taxes, the first installment of which can be found here.

I suspect this type of thing is happening all over the country, but it appears the AJC has undertaken a remarkably difficult task in compiling all the Greater Atlanta information regarding this issue.

The reason I’m paying attention to this story is because my house is in DeKalb County and the difference between the county’s appraisal and the appraisal that I obtained from a licensed appraiser is substantial. It’s a new house, so the county took the opportunity to set the initial tax value value much higher than the house is worth.

My wife and I filed an appeal in June. As of today, the county’s website still has us listed as Appeal Pending. The long wait is likely the result of some 14,000 appeals filed in DeKalb County alone.

I wonder if the long-term fallout of this whole debacle will include changes in how the county handles taxes in general. It’s pretty apparent that a tax system based on something that can fluctuate so dramatically is somewhat flawed and provides county governments with limited foresight into future revenue.

Hey man, you want an audition, you’ve got one, although I’m not seeing an easy way to write in a character pontificating on opera. :)

Also, the terms of the Dollar Baby contract state that the project has to be non-commercial, so I can’t make any money off of it. Which means no investors. Hence, it’ll be a typical ultra-low budget project, so you’ll have to be okay with my gratitude and craft services.

Survivor Type

Ahh hell, it’s not even 8:00am on a Monday and Huff is talking Stephen King. And since I’ve been holding on to some exciting King-related news, might as well talk about it on the ol’ tumblr.

“Survivor Type” is a short story found in one of King’s earlier collections, Skeleton Crew. It’s a delightfully gruesome story about a surgeon who is stuck on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean after his cruise liner sinks, and what he has to do to survive.

And my next short film project will be an authorized adaptation of “Survivor Type.” Just got the final confirmation from his office last week.

The script is coming along, a few pages are finished with an eye towards a finished first draft by the end of the month with an eye towards an April start date on production. We’ll probably be shooting interiors in Atlanta and the island scenes in the Jekyll/St. Simons area, though a lot of questions remain to be answered in that regard.

Anyway, that’s my good news for the day.
