Microsoft has filed for a patent on a system that would monitor the number of people watching a movie at home — and prompt them to buy more licenses if a few friends came over.

I actually find this kind of thing refreshing. We all know big corporations are evil. It’s nice to see some of them no longer trying to hide it.

Okay, as much as I want to believe she is the mother. I think this girl is a red herring. I have watched the show for too long to fall for this. I mean she is billed as ‘the girl with the yellow umbrella’ for a reason. Now, I am all for season 9 letting us get to know the mother, but I feel like either 5 seconds into the first episode of season 9 this girl hands the umbrella to the actual mother or at the end of the first episode they will cut back to this girl handing the umbrella to the mother.

This was a poorly-done reveal. If it does turn out she’s the mother, we don’t get a name, we get a confusing line (if she’s in the wedding band, wouldn’t she already have a ticket? Barney’s fucking loaded, surely he could pay for the band playing the reception to go out to the Hamptons) and…nothing else. So you get misogynistic, shallow comments on Twitter about what the actress looks like, partly because the audience gets nothing else to go on. You hope she nailed the casting audition and has great chemistry with the other actors, and this was all a closely-kept secret, but at the same time, I could have sworn we were told, renewal or no, that we’d see the Barney and Robin wedding in this finale. Instead we get a slew of plots far more interesting than the back half of this season, a reminder that Casey Wilson is great, and yet another ride on the Ted/Robin tilt-a-whirl. And I just don’t see a way they can go from nearly 8 season of “kids, I loved your aunt Robin for years, but your mother’s my silver medal” and have it work. Partly because I made the mistake of saying “they have an end date, and they really know where they’re going, I trust them” once before, with LOST, and look how that turned out.

I actually the reveal was very clever, it should have just happened maybe 2 episodes before the series finale instead of, you know, AN ENTIRE SEASON. They pulled the nice individual shot of each cast member and then brought her in. I know they have the red herring thing down, of course, but the way this was presented, how they actually shot that sequence, made it feel important, like this was the mother. The casting was very particular, too, choosing Cristin Milioti, an actress who is well-regarded in the industry and has done *just* enough to be recognized as extremely talented but not enough to be well-known.

I could be wrong, sure, but I think they really have revealed the mother and this time they are using their history to make the viewers second guess things. Which is kinda cool in it’s own way.

She was also carrying the bass. You really think she’s holding an umbrella and a bass guitar for someone else?

And I agree completely, it can’t be Robin. I certainly think the quality of Season 9 is very much questionable at this point. But as I said in my earlier post, I’ll be open-minded about it.

Also, not for nothing, but “So you get misogynistic, shallow comments on Twitter about what the actress looks like, partly because the audience gets nothing else to go on” is literally throwing blame on the show’s creative choice (like it or not) for the misogyny of some asshole twitter followers. That’s just plain bullshit.

Based on the description for tonight’s season finale, I’m expecting more stalling and disappointment.

I’m expecting the mother reveal, mostly because I’m expecting the mother to become the narrator next year. May not happen, of course. Also, it seems at least somewhat likely there will be a time jump next year, they keep hinting at that.

However, I tend to agree, this show should have ended this year and the push for one more was a fairly unfortunate cash grab - I wish Jason Segel had held out and just said no. But I’ll bet you good money that if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. makes it to Season 2, you’ll see Agent Maria Hill stop in more regularly.
